If you are interested in learning the ropes we have set up a series of classes to help you progress through the sport from beginner through advanced. Classes can be set up by appointment and are either done as a one on one or with a group of your friends. Please call or stop by the gym to schedule a class. Check back, we will be adding more classes to the list as we get them set up. Climbing 101:
Members free (with three month commitment)
$55 Nonmembers
2 Hours
Beginner level, no prerequisite
Always wanted to try climbing but didn’t know where to start? Have you had a friend teach you but you feel you need to learn more. Learn about the different types of rock climbing, gear and what it's used for, belaying, commands and spotting. Class includes harness and shoe rental, for the class, and a 3 week membership. Top rope belay & Rappel:
$10 Nonmembers/$8 members Up to 1 hour long Beginner level, no prerequisite
In this class we will teach the fundamentals of top rope belay and rappeling using an ATC type or non auto block device. Figure 8 knot with a follow through, difference between belay devices, PBUS belay technique, and rappelling with both ATC type and figure eight device will be taught. Recommended for anyone looking to get into climbing. Anchor building:
$40 Nonmembers/$30 members 2 Hours Must pass unprompted top rope belay and rappel test.
Whether you’re looking to top rope or even just rappel outside this class will teach you the basics of setting up an ERNEST anchor using preplaced protection (anchor bolts or chains). We’ll cover the proper set up and teardown of a climbing anchor using an equilette while hanging on the wall.
Lead Climbing:
$40 Nonmembers/$30 members 2 Hours Must pass top rope belay test using an ATC type device, unprompted. Must also setup and teardown an ERNEST anchor system, unprompted.
Pretty much all of the outside climbs locally need to be led first before they can be top roped; learn the skills needed to be on the sharp end. Learn to better avoid back clips, z clips, short roping, decking, and flipping upside down in a fall. This sport leading class will cover the basics of leading a route that has preplaced protection. Lead belay and lead climbing techniques will be covered.
We feel these classes are set up in a natural progression and they should not be taught out of order as skills needed to successfully learn skills could require skills taught in a previous class. That being said if you have already learned these skills through another class and can show competence in an unprompted test we will allow you to take the next course. Climbing can be as safe or as dangerous as the people doing it. These are introductory classes and only teach the basics of their respective skills. No class can prepare you for every hazard you can come across in the climbing world. Furthermore, a lot of practice is required to solidify these skills as well as better prepare you to deal with new obstacles as they arise. In short you are ultimately responsible for your own actions and should always do everything you can to further you knowledge. |
